Integrated P2X Projects: A Step Change from Single Generation
Operating P2X projects, such as green hydrogen production, presents both opportunities and challenges when compared to pure renewable generation projects. Besides requiring more OEM’s to be on board, you also have to look into very different operations scopes, both on the technical and commercial side.
On the technical side, P2X projects require different staff, many with specialised training in safety and operation of both electrical and processing assets with pressurised equipment and gasses.
On the commercial side, a range of new commercial opportunities arise when green hydrogen or eFuel production is added to your renewable asset. The physical configuration of the generation assets, batteries, and electrolyser – in combination with the grid connection – set the boundaries for how the day-to-day and minute-to-minute operation can be done.
The Case for Early, Integrated Operational Planning
To get maximum value out of your generation and P2X assets in the operational phase, you need to prepare well in advance of FID. Not only dimensioning your assets, but also deciding how, and who, to operate your assets during the operational phase. As soon as you start talking to suppliers of wind turbines, solar panels, batteries, or P2X equipment, you should be prepared to ensure alignment of incentives and processes across all service contracts, and to implement tools and procedures to maximize value.
Many factors play into the overall optimisation of the economic outcome. These include grid connection capacity, technical boundaries by each asset, cost implications related to the operational pattern, and OPEX related to the O&M scheduling.
